«BRO is a wheelchair, exactly how I always imagined it.»

As one of the pioneers, Michael received the very first Scewo BRO in 2020 – the wheelchair with serial number 1. Thrilled by the technology and the countless adventures he’s experienced thanks to BRO, he decided to upgrade nearly a year ago. Now, with the new BRO Series One, he continues his journey with even more excitement and a zest for adventure.

Our planned visit near Michael’s hometown was set to take us to the Staubern, an impressive peak in the Alpstein mountain range in eastern Switzerland. But strong winds halted our plans – the mountain lift was shut down. For Michael, this was no cause for concern. True to his adaptable nature, he quickly loaded his BRO back into the car, and we shifted to a spontaneous plan: instead of heading up, we explored nature at Werdenberger Lake. There, Michael shared with us why his BRO means not just mobility but true freedom to him.

More than just a mobility aid

For the first time, the tech enthusiast and father discovered the Scewo BRO in a video. Just one test drive was all it took to fully convince him. «When I first drove BRO, I knew right away: This is the wheelchair for me», Michael reminisces. By now, BRO is much more than just an assistive device for him; in fact, Michael considers it a part of the family. In his daily work as an IT specialist, BRO provides him with the vital support he needs to remain mobile and spontaneous.

Given the challenges posed by his Bethlem myopathy (muscular dystrophy), the stair-climbing electric wheelchair helps him lead a largely independent and flexible life. «With BRO, I have something that makes my life significantly easier», he tells us enthusiastically. Everyday activities like climbing stairs or simply standing up from chairs would be nearly impossible with the progression of his condition if it weren’t for BRO.

Bethlem Myopathy – A Rare Muscle Disorder

Bethlem myopathy is a rare genetic muscle disorder belonging to the group of collagen VI muscular dystrophies, affecting approximately five in a million people. It often presents itself in childhood, leading to progressive muscle weakness, primarily in the legs and sometimes in the arms. Although there is no cure, physical therapy and assistive devices like wheelchairs can significantly improve mobility and quality of life. Many affected individuals remain mobile for years and only require a wheelchair in adulthood.

Spontaneously on the Go and Always Engaging

Michael later shares with us that his BRO gives him a whole new sense of freedom – extensive planning is a thing of the past, and he can now live much more spontaneously. «A few weeks ago, for example, we had a team event, and there were only stairs everywhere. With BRO, I didn’t have to worry and could easily manage them.» But it’s not just the support that BRO offers him – it’s also how others perceive him. «People are usually very curious and often approach me with questions», he says with a smile. The positive feedback further encourages Michael, giving him the sense that, with his BRO, he’s found not only a solution for himself but has also sparked enthusiasm in others.

Adventures Across All Terrains

«Outdoor means a lot to me», Michael confirms. Since getting his BRO, there’s hardly an adventure in nature or a trip to distant lands where he hasn’t relied on the support of his loyal companion. In his daily life, he transports his BRO effortlessly in his car. Using a car ramp and remote control via an Xbox controller, he can load and unload the wheelchair with ease. When it comes to travelling by plane with BRO, Michael has become a true pro.

Two years ago, he traveled with his wife Esther to Canada, navigating through national parks and along uneven forest trails with ease. During a New Year’s stay in Miami with his family, transporting BRO in a rental car was no problem at all. His most recent adventure took him to Greece, from Delphi to Athens. «Without BRO, it wouldn’t have been possible», Michael shares. The rocky paths and ancient cobblestones would be challenging for many, but with his BRO, Michael could easily overcome every hurdle. «As long as I have my BRO with me, everything’s fine», Michael concludes, and you can feel the sense of security his wheelchair gives him.

Heading to new horizons

Michael’s journey with his BRO is far from over – in fact, it’s only just beginning. Always in search of new challenges, he’s already dreaming of bigger adventures. At the top of his list: visiting the Great Wall of China with BRO or exploring distant places like Kuala Lumpur. It’s not just the destinations that impress us, but Michael’s attitude: always open, always ready to embrace new challenges. Who knows what adventures the future holds for him? One thing is certain: with BRO by his side, Michael is perfectly equipped for whatever comes his way.
